National Park Service Challenge
With unpredictability and unease around climate change, government policy, park usage and management, scenario planning is a tool used to help parks prepare for this uncertainty.
2x2 Method
Using the GBN (Global Business Network) Scenario Planning method of 2x2 matrix to explore the key issue the first step is to identify the driving forces that will effect the future of the park system. Driving forces such as population growth and it’s impact on the environment, water, technology, tourism and travel, green energy trends and advocacy, mineral mining, oil, fossil fuels, etc, the corporations role in the economy and the decisions in policy-making.
The axis labels are climate change and technology. For climate axis, at the top of the axis climate change takes a drastic toll on the environment worldwide and the face of the earth is changed drastically. For example, glaciers melt, oceans rise, and deserts are uninhabitable. On the other end of the axis, climate change is mitigated and in some instances, damage is repaired or even reversed in some instances. The face of the earth stays relatively constant with some improvements to air quality and water preservation.
