JUNE 2015, SAN FRANCISCO
San Francisco Design Week (SFDW) is a great way to kick-off summer in the Bay Area. From fine art to high tech, everyone gets psyched on design from Silicon Valley to San Francisco. MBA in Design Strategy (DMBA) students and alumni organized a workshop for SFDW. We were honored to be a sold out event among nearly 100 events for SFDW.
The “Design + Business” workshop presented a human-centered approach to building a business model workshop with a focus on entrepreneurship.
In this workshop, we introduced an important visual tool for entrepreneurs called the Business Model Canvas (BMC). The BMC can be used as a blueprint for your business. It helps identify how-to create and deliver value to customers while ensuring financial viability for the company.
A presentation explained that the BMC can be used as a blueprint for a new business or inter-departmentally in a large corporation. Chris Young (DMBA Alum) explained to the group that with either application, the BMC helps users identify how to create and deliver value to customers while ensuring financial viability for the company.
Recent graduates, Reena Merchant, Ravi Rao, and Rachel Posman presented their Venture Studio project-turned-startup, Habdash (habdash.co) as a real life example to help demystify the process.
Participants broke into small groups and created their own BMC. Through presenting their findings and a group discussion led by Shane Chase (DMBA student), attendees learned that business model innovation is discovered by finding ways to forge the best fit between a businesses customer segments and the products or services that meet their wants, desires, and needs.
The evening was a great success for the participants, presenters, producers, and volunteers.
